Volunteer in Africa - Mombasa
Volunteer opportunities
There are many volunteer opportunities at Grandsons of Abraham (GOA) rescue center in Mombasa through all times of the year. There are different projects taking place each month and the volunteers are placed in these according to the needs of the children and the center. The projects are not strictly structured. It is up to the volunteers what they would like to be involved with when they arrive at the center. There are opportunities for volunteer teachers, teacher assistants and nursery assistants. Other volunteering work could involve construction, building or working on the farm.
You don't need to be qualified to work as a teacher at the center. The GOA volunteers are enthusiastic, self- motivated, hard-working and they want to make a difference in the lives of the street children.
Where it is located
The volunteer base is located in Mikindani town. It is situated approximately 10 miles from Mombasa. The local people are very warm, simple, friendly and it will not take you long to feel like you're at home. The GOA rescue center is located in Mikindani and it takes 5 minutes walking distance frpm the volunteers' house to get there.
Volunteer teachers, teacher assistants, nursery assistants
As a volunteer teacher or assistant you will have to take up classes from levels 1-8. The center offers basic education and operates as a school for the kids. The lessons you will be teaching could be English, Maths, Science, Social Studies and C.R.E (Christian Religious Education). The center has its own textbooks so you don't need to bring your own. Of course if you feel like adding something to the teaching lessons you are more than welcome. As a nursery assistant you will have the opportunity to create various activities with the kids, like drawing, playing games, sing, dance etc. Just bring all your creativity with you.
The classes take place every day from 8:30 am to 15:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Volunteer with children in Mombasa, Kenya
If you’re resilient, patient and
optimistic, a number of projects in Mombasa need your support helping
vulnerable children. Mombasa is Kenya’s second largest city and is home
to more than 30,000 street children and many more youngsters who have
been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. By giving your support to these local
initiatives, you’ll reach out to some of those children and help put
their lives back on track. You also enjoy a full immersion into this
stunning coastal city, which boasts some of the world’s best beaches.
While at times these projects may be challenging, you can be sure your
hard work will be worthwhile.
The project This project encompasses a number of projects that aim to alleviate some of the difficult circumstances facing many young people living in Mombasa today. There are opportunities to work with children who have been abandoned; orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS; or whose families may be entrenched in poverty and unable to take care of them. Many of these children are street kids who receive care and education at rescue centres and children's homes. These projects exist to rescue, rehabilitate, educate and relocate children who have suffered great hardships as a result of poverty and difficult family backgrounds.
By 2001 an estimated 890,000 children in Kenya had been orphaned by the HIV/AIDS virus, and with 15% of the population between 15 and 49 believed to be carrying the virus, there is an increasing number of children caught up in the wake of the epidemic.
The overall result has been a dramatic increase in the number of children, from toddlers to teens, who are living on the streets. Without the means to make any kind of living, they are subject to severe poverty, abuse, drugs and worse. While some children do have surviving relatives to take them in, often the families cannot fully support them, and are able to provide little more than a roof and the occasional meal.
The projects that we work with in Mombassa endeavour to offer support and advice to young people affected by homelessness, poverty and/or the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Volunteers are desperately needed to support the staff running the centres, and to provide some basic skills and companionship. As English is a national language in Kenya, English teachers are a permanent necessity and by helping in these areas you can bring an invaluable skill to the young people you work with.
Your role as a volunteer:
Due to the nature of the projects, your time as a volunteer will be full and varied. Work with children will involve an element of teaching, which will usually be English, but also Maths, Health Education and any other areas you feel comfortable helping out with. For the older children, you can help out with developing vocational skills, such as craft work, sports and growing vegetables. You can also expect to assist with the day-to-day running of the projects, including cooking, preparing meals, cleaning and care work.
You will need to be flexible, and have initiative and enthusiasm to face the many hurdles and challenges that you will inevitably encounter within your role. To ensure that you get the most out of and contribute fully to your project, a pro-active attitude is essential. Any skills that you have in sports, music, drama, art or fundraising will be more than welcome.
Above all, you must have a love of children and commitment to the project. Volunteers with experience in physical education may be able to get involved with strenuous physical activities as part of detoxification and rehabilitation programmes for children coming off drugs. Volunteers may wish to educate themselves on HIV/AIDS and other health issues facing young people.
Accommodation:
You'll be staying in a shared volunteer house or homestay according to availability. The accommodation will be basic but clean. Transport to your project will be by matatu (multi-people taxi) and will take about an hour.
Project resources and advice:
The projects will have resources that they use on a daily basis but these are likely to be minimal. You may need to bring or purchase sports equipment, crafts or stationery, this can be bought in Mombasa but please budget for this.
Local facilities:
Mombassa is the second largest city in Kenya and is also the largest coastal port in East Africa. It has good transport connections and is well linked to the rest of the country. Facilities are good, with several banks, including Barclays, internet cafes, tour operators and most of the other main amenities you would expect from a city.

Volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year
or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the
world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects -
then volunteer trips are for you!
Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of
different backgrounds and from all over the world. Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
How this holiday makes a difference
We believe that travel can change lives! Travelling can change you as a person and, if done responsibly, can have a profound affect on the people that you meet and the places that you visit. We want as many people as possible to experience the heart and soul of another culture in the way that we have, and in doing so, help them to make a positive and lasting impact on our world.Africa may be the cradle of civilization but it is facing one of humanity’s biggest crises. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has caused devastation across the continent. This local project in Mombassa works with some of the almost 1 million Kenyan children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to the disease. Most people who visit Kenya make tracks to the national parks and the safari jeeps but this project is here to introduce you to Kenya’s real star attractions. When you travel and volunteer in Kenya you will work alongside local people and get to know the people and communities you help ultimately making a significant difference to the lives of people you meet and helping to mitigate the effects of acute poverty and the consequences of the AIDS epidemic.
What makes us different is that we don't run overseas projects. Instead we work in partnership with projects that have already been established in communities and supply them with what they need the most - helping hands. It is through this constant stream of committed volunteers that the projects can manage to improve people’s lives. On this project you’ll play a part in rehabilitating children living in great hardships and you’ll leave knowing you have made a big difference as well as a bunch of new friends.
You’ll stay in either a locally owned volunteer house or homestay ensuring that you directly support the local community while you’re there. You’ll also be supported by your local in-country coordinator; who with their team are best placed to understand the specific economic, social and developmental needs of Mombassa.
On average half of your placement fee is distributed in-country for the services included with your placement (i.e. Local support, Food, Transport & Accommodation) meaning that the local communities are directly benefiting from your travels to their country. The remaining funds are required to cover the administration costs associated with sourcing, training, marketing and coordinating your travel experience.
We do not give a financial contribution to this or any of our projects as we believe that money is rarely the answer to complicated development issues; if it was, the poverty problems in the world would be getting better! Short-term aid relief can cause aid-reliance and financial instability and the corruption seen in many developing countries means the guarantee of your money going to the heart of the cause is massively reduced. From our experience (and by learning from our mistakes) projects benefit far greater more from a sustainable framework to ensure they develop rather than short-term financial aid relief.
If money is paid directly to projects then they may become dependent on that income. If that country or project becomes unpopular, or through restrictions in the opportunity to travel to that country, the money dries up and they are no longer able to continue with their work. Supplying projects with enthusiastic volunteers creates a constant supply of helpful hands and as they are not reliant on an income can continue without the assistance of the volunteer travellers, although significantly slower in achieving their goals.

Known for it's spectacular white, sandy beaches and clear Indian Ocean waters Mombasa attracts many holiday maker to it's outlying beach resorts. Inside the city there is still a small town feel as the streets are lined with small wooden huts with traders selling their wares. Originally a Swahili tribe town, Mombasa was conquered by three successive colonial powers all leaving their imprints on the modern day city.A short ferry ride from the city are the villages where our volunteers will be based. Small rural communities line the red dust streets and children of all ages pour into the community schools.
Volunteers
at our Mombasa project will be based in small villages on the south
coast. Schools here are desperatley trying to provide a comprehensive
education for all of their students but are hindered by a lack of
resources. Classes of between 60 and 80 students are the norm so our
volunteers can do a huge amount to help by contributing to the teaching
workforce.

Overview
Volunteer with orphans and disadvantaged children in Kenya, East Africa
Assist with care, education, counselling, arts and sports projects for impoverished children and orphans from Mombasa
This project brings you to the vibrant city of Mombasa, on the
Indian Ocean, East Africa and the Bombolulu slum where urban migrant and
impoverished communities live next to the upmarket residences of Nyali.
Work alongside volunteer teachers at a children's centre providing
education to the most vulnerable children, improving literacy,
supporting counselling, environmental and social awareness. The centres
provide free or affordable education to children who are orphaned or
whose families have little or no income. Out of school arts and sports
programmes help combat social pressures that lead to substance abuse and
crime. Gain an insight into the challenges faced by urban communities
in East Africa and learn how grass-roots organisations offer real
opportunities and care for the children most in need, with minimal
resources. Experience history, traditional Swahili culture and
cosmopolitan Kenya in the nation's second largest city. Visit Mombasa’s
old town, where Arabic, Portuguese and British influences converge in
this ancient Swahili city
Further training options are also available at this location, including a short term community development internship.

The friendliness of the local people/children we
were working alongside has given me so many lasting memories! The GVI
staff members make you feel at ease and the accommodation exceeded
expectations.
What Difference Does This Project Make?
The children's centres aim to provide under-privileged children with free education, and critically, meals - hunger is one of the most common reasons children fail to attend government schools. In a holistic approach the centres offers counselling to children from broken or abusive homes or who are orphaned, as well as to parents. Entirely reliant on independent donors to rent small, basic classrooms, the centres achieve remarkable results - children sponsored to go onto private mainstream education are typically within the top 10% of their class. This project delivers opportunities to children from disrupted homelives, supporting health and social awareness in an area with high HIV prevalence, prostitution and drug abuse, and limited access to healthcare. Volunteers not only make a direct contribution caring for and educating the children but increase the capacity of the centres to improve facilities, programmes and funding.Highlights
